On Monday afternoon, February 2nd, my house caught fire while I wasn't home. The fire department arrived on the scene pretty quickly and extinguished the blaze. Unfortunately, the house is not livable and will take awhile for it to be "normal" again. The house is now boarded up and is waiting for the insurance company to do their thing to get my life back to normal. I hope they don't screw me over. In the meantime I'm living like a nomad. All my important stuff is in my car and I've been staying at my parents house.
It could have been far worse then it was. The fire was contained in the kitchen and didn't burn down anything else. However, standard procedure for the fire department is to break and knock out every single window in the house to help vent the fire. The only window they missed was the one that was slightly cracked already. And the big double sliding glass door going out back was shattered ... AND THEN opened. Tell me how that makes sense? When I got home the fire had just started about 10-15 minutes before. I ran up to the front door and looked in. From there, through the black smoke I could see the kitchen stove and the huge flames that were blazing around it, up the walls, and across the ceiling which were starting to reach under the top of a door frame to the foyer. I've never seen something like this up close. You only ever see something like this on TV or in the movies. Seeing it 10 feet from your face is something entirely different. A friend of mine lives in the basement and his car was in the driveway but I hadn't actually seen him yet. For fear that he was in the basement, I charged into the house and into the basement to look for him. Thankfully he wasn't actually home. But I was able to find the dog cowering downstairs from the smoke. I got Kolby out of the house and my other dog was outside in the back yard, safe and sound. I also have 2 cats in the house and at the time we could not find them. A couple of hours later we did find them in the basement under a bed, scared out of their mind, but otherwise unharmed and safe. As for the cause of the fire, I do not have the official Fire Dept. report yet, but while on-site they told me it was ultimately undetermined. I took some pictures of the aftermath for posterity. See the following link: http://liche.net/fire/ - The first few tell the real story, while the rest are basically proof that the fire dept. knocked out the windows, and some extra damage they caused upstairs. -------------------- Stormtrooper

Well, #1 I'm glad everybody is safe ( including Kolby
I hope everything gets resolved for you quickly. I know this kind of disruption is more stressful than it should be. Dealing with all those insurance people and the investigators will be tiring. My family and I will be praying for you, and we'll be here when you get back to your "normal" life -------------------- |

Huh. I'm sure the insurance company will make everything in their effort to try to screw you over though... there was a documentary about it. I hope you get it all sorted out.

It is great to hear that everything is ok. You will be in my prayers and thoughts, hopefully the insurance takes care of you. I still wonder what caused it though, it is so crazy.

Well, I talked to the adjusters today and I get the sense that everything will be ok, and the insurance will in fact be covering everything, no problem. The only issue is that I'm looking at about 3 months before I get my life back to normal.... This sucks.

Believe me, this puts a damper on a lot of things I do on a daily basis, including working on PS4. Once my insurance gets me into some temporary housing where I can stretch out and put my computer somewhere I'll be in OK shape. But for the moment I'm stuck in a rut.

Damn!
Sometimes bad things happen in your live, but, god thanks, nobody was hurt and everything that was damaged during the fire is fixable (cause our lifes are not). I hope the insurance will pay for everything. |

My insurance finally approved me for the apartment that I wanted. I'll be moving into that next week which will give me at least some sort of normalcy in my life and I can settle down for a few months while my house is rebuilt.

I am vary sorry to hear about that! I know this has to be a huge strain on you but its also good that you are still moving on with what you enjoy doing the most... I guess if that happened to me now I would be upset but it wouldn't stop me from enjoying life as it could have been worse I guess. When I was about 7yrs old our house caught on fire and there was a bunch of water damage too! My father made the best of it and updated and remodeled our entire kitchen and basement with a family friend! When we finally went back to our house it looked the same outside but the inside was totally remodeled... I do respect the Fire Departments its a vary risky job wouldn't want to have to do what they do its seriously life threatening. Its always bad though when they make sure there isn't a window smashed or a wall not destroyed but I guess if I was in their shows my personal safety would matter more then trying to be polite to the home owners windows... But sheesh lol they had to smash every window? Maybe one of them knows or is related to a local Window manufacturer?
Well I hope everything else is ok? I been wondering why I wasn't getting anything out of anyone I PM'd here... -------------------- |
