Due to some recent abuse by spammers, I've disabled the PM system for all members until a 'fix' can be implemented or the abuse reports die down. I apologize for the inconvenience.

I guess it was the same bot that sent those PM's like on other forums, where it sent you a link to a site that asks you to do image verification which in turn is used to register bots on other forums?

Hello Storm, does that mean that the PM I've just been notified for is a spam and can be ignored?-------------------- ...Il faut aimer la vie et l'aimer meme si le temps est assassin et emporte avec lui le rire des enfant...

Hello Storm, does that mean that the PM I've just been notified for is a spam and can be ignored? Correct. The user that did it was deleted as well. -------------------- Stormtrooper

you cant really prevent someone from pming you except by denying free email accounts and putting up an image verification to prevent people from making a program to autoregister. The only problem with denying free email accounts is that most everyone has hotmail, gmail, yahoo accounts and so forth
and as for having only people who have posted allow to pm, that would just incite the people doing this to write programs that will spam the forums instead of pming people at random. -------------------- |

I tried re-enabling the PM system last night, and this morning I have another hundred replies in my email... sigh. According to the announcement from the IPB folks, its a new wave of spammers doing this and they believe a human is actually registering in order to get around the captcha and then a bot is let loose to spam all the members.
I've disabled PM's again, and have deleted the 2 user accounts that were spamming. I've also applied a patch that adds flood controls to the PM system. This won't solve the problem but will help lessen the impact of PM's so I can delete the offending accounts as needed. -------------------- Stormtrooper

Yes, I've gotten 3 messages from this "muzrinkl" person so far, email notices that I have private messages here.
Flood control >= 1 minute. Proxy login denial (no traceback no access). Disallow use of known crap email services for registration, like yahoo. |

Handling a spammer like this is fairly easy.
Whatever adult sites he is spamming, means he is an advertiser for them. Any money he has possibly accumulated would be taken from him by the site he was spamming...ie violating TOS. Any retail adult site will not allow spamming of adult material to unqualified users, especially on non-adult sites. No way to verify users are 18 or even give notice of site being for users 18yrs or older. When dealing with spammers, simply send a copy of the email/pm or whatever they used to the email address listed on the domain, as well as the NOC for the provider. Owner of site doesn't want to be blackholed by provider. Laws can't help much, but hitting spammers in the wallet is a good thing. A lot of times you can't personally stop the spammers. By dealing with upstream provider and site owner, action is generally taken very quickly. |
